The Ministry of Finance says it is confident that the 2026 Budget Statement and Economic Policy will help consolidate the economic progress Ghana has recorded in recent months and translate it into long-term prosperity for citizens. Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Nyarko Ampem, addressing Members of Parliament at a Post-Budget Workshop in Accra, urged lawmakers on both sides of the House to support the approval of the budget. He said the document focuses on expanding job creation, upgrading infrastructure, strengthening industries, and improving public services. According to the Deputy Minister, the 2026 Budget builds on the economic stability achieved in 2025 and is structured to channel that momentum into tangible development outcomes. “Our request for approval is driven by the progress made over the past 10 months, including GDP growth increasing from 5.3% in 2024 to 6.3% in the first half of 2025, driven by strong performance in services, agriculture, and construction,” he told MPs. Mr. Nyarko Ampem said measures approved by Parliament earlier in the year are already yielding results for businesses and households. He emphasized the government’s commitment to sustaining economic growth and ensuring that recent stability leads to broader national prosperity. “The rally call is for government to turn this new stability into prosperity, and this budget seeks to do exactly that,” he added. The Ministry of Labour, Jobs, and Employment has established a Health and Safety Enforcement and Compliance Special Task Force to strengthen the oversight of workplace standards in the Ashanti region. The task force, initiated by Dr Rashid Pelpuo, sector minister, aims to support the Factory Inspectorate Agency in ensuring employers fully adhered to health and safety laws. Dr Pelpuo stated that the law required employers in both the public and private sectors to provide safe working conditions and protect workers' health. He noted that employers were expected to register their companies and facilitate annual inspections by the Factory Inspectorate Agency to safeguard employees' safety and working conditions. However, compliance has been low, mainly due to a limited workforce within the Factory Inspectorate Agency, which is responsible for inspecting and certifying workplaces annually to ensure conformity. At the inauguration of the task force in Kumasi , the minister said the team had been set up to assist in monitoring, identifying violations, and ensuring that employers strictly follow workplace safety regulations. For his part, the Chairman of the Health and Safety Committee of the ministry's task force, Daniel Ayikwei, urged the task force to execute their work properly. Six young people who were injured during a stampede at the ongoing Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) screening exercise at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on Wednesday in the Ashanti Region have been discharged. The victims sustained varying degrees of injury compelling CAF to rush them to Tech, Komfo Anokye among other health facilities in Kumasi. Mayor of Kumasi Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi described the incident as unfortunate and assured the public that measures have be taken to prevent similar occurrences during future recruitment or screening exercises. Despite widespread calls for a nationwide suspension of the ongoing Ghana Armed Forces recruitment exercise, following Wednesday’s deadly stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra, the process is continuing at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi. Thousands of young men and women have thronged the stadium at dawn, hoping to secure a place in the country’s military service. Many have queued, undergoing various stages of physical screening and document verification. This comes barely 48 hours after six prospective recruits in Accra lost their lives and several others sustained injuries in a stampede, forcing authorities to suspend the process in the capital. However, in Kumasi, the exercise continues to gather even greater momentum, with large crowds and a heavy security presence. Award-winning Ghanaian musician Samini has addressed concerns over his live performance at the 29th Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Awards, explaining that technical issues with the event’s sound system affected the quality of his delivery on stage. The celebrated reggae and dancehall artiste performed before a distinguished audience that included His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, and President John Dramani Mahama. However, sections of the audience noted that the sound during his set was below the expected standard. In an exclusive interview with the media after the event, Samini clarified that his performance was hindered by problems with the stage monitors, which made it difficult for him to hear himself in real time. “For a live performer, technical issues come up every now and then — this was one of those moments,” he said. “When your stage monitors are not working, you end up singing with the echo from the room, which delays your timing. So if you were in the audience, you might think I was offbeat, but it’s because I couldn’t hear myself properly.” Samini added that his appearance at the awards was impromptu, as he had not been billed officially to perform. According to him, his participation was prompted by a personal request from the GJA President, who is his classmate. “I didn’t even come to the event as a performer. My band was scattered around, but when my classmate — the GJA President — asked if I could do a quick set, I agreed. The band that played did great, but the only issue was with the sound monitors, which is nobody’s fault. These things happen,” he explained. Despite the setback, Samini took the incident in stride, noting that technical challenges are part of live performances and do not define his artistry. “As a professional, you just enjoy the moment and move on. If the sound engineers are listening, they’ll know that for live artists, proper monitoring is key,” he said with a smile. The GJA Awards, held under the distinguished patronage of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, honored excellence in journalism and media practice. Dr. Winfred Richard Anane, former Minister of Roads & High Ways and former Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso, has expressed deep concern about the state of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), describing it as having “sunk so low” that party members openly challenge former President John Agyekum Kufuor in his presence. In an interview with Kojo Marfo on EIB’s Abusua965FM in Kumasi Dr. Anane recounted a tense party meeting held about two weeks ago, which was attended by former President Kufuor. Although party matters are generally kept confidential, Dr. Anane emphasized the need for transparency in this instance. He revealed that during the meeting, former President Kufuor criticized the “Top Bottom” approach of electing leadership as ineffective. Again, according to Dr. Anane, former President Kufuor proposed that all living former party chairmen be assembled to form a supervisory group for the party, given that the current elected Chairman, Stephen Ntim, is no longer overseeing party activities for one or two unspecified reasons. However, the proposal met strong opposition, notably from Bono Ahafo Regional Chairman, Abronye DC. “Do you know who reacted to this suggestion? Bono Regional Chairman, Abronye. Abronye, when we were forming this party, where was he?,” Dr. Anane asked angrily. He added, “Abronye said Kufuor mentioned Afoko’s name; what is he trying to imply? Oh! The room erupted in hoots from the people there at Abronye.” The acting party Chairman, Butey, intervened to calm the situation, requesting that Kufuor’s suggestion be reconsidered and that feedback would be provided later. “And the acting Chairman of the party now, Butey, informed President Kufuor that he begged him to allow them to consider the suggestion and later provide feedback,” Dr. Anane remarked. Dr. Anane criticized Abronye DC’s confrontational stance, questioning his role during the party’s formation and contrasting it with Kufuor’s long-standing political experience. “Where Kufuor has walked in life, has Abronye ever stepped out there? These are the reasons the party is where it is now,” he bemoaned. On another matter, Dr. Anane was asked if the formation of the United Party (UP) party by Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen would affect the NPP. He acknowledged the potential impact, stating, “Whether we like it or not, it will have an impact on the party. Addressing the media in Accra, the Minister said government remains resolute in its fight against illegal mining, which continues to destroy farmlands, forests, and major water bodies across the country. The lands Minister warning follows renewed pressure from civil society groups, including the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) and the Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey, who have called for the declaration of a state of emergency to address the worsening menace. According to the Minister, while the government acknowledges the severity of the crisis, existing enforcement and policy mechanisms must first be strengthened and fully utilized before new drastic measures are considered. As part of efforts to enhance operations against illegal mining, Kofi Armah Buah announced the donation of 10 additional vehicles to the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat to boost mobility and efficiency in field operations. “This government is not against mining. We support small- and large-scale miners who work responsibly and sustainably,” he stated. “But anyone, including chiefs, who aids in the destruction of our water bodies and forests through illegal mining will be held accountable.” The Minister emphasized that protecting the nation’s natural resources was a “higher calling” and urged security agencies and all stakeholders to remain committed to the task. “You are the last line of defense for this country. If we allow the destruction of our water bodies and environment to continue, Ghana’s future will be at risk. Over 30 million Ghanaians are counting on us to deliver,” he said. Chiefs complicit in illegal mining will face prosecution – Lands Minister warns
A raging fire that tore through the China City Mall at Santasi in Kumasi on Thursday, October 30, has exposed worrying lapses in the facility’s fire safety preparedness. The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has confirmed that the six-month-old mall had been operating without essential fire safety installations, including a fire hydrant or a mechanised borehole. Head of Public Relations at the GNFS, Divisional Officer (DO II) Desmond E. Ackah, revealed that the absence of these critical systems greatly hampered firefighting efforts and fueled the rapid spread of the blaze. “Unfortunately, there was no fire hydrant. Once an establishment meets the basic fire safety requirements, it is permitted to begin operations. However, compliance is progressive — from less costly measures to more capital-intensive ones,” Mr. Ackah explained in an interview on Friday, October 31. He added that the mall’s management had yet to install a hydrant or provide an alternative water storage facility, despite being aware of the requirement. “They were supposed to have a fire hydrant or an alternative water storage system, but that hasn’t been done. They opened just six months ago, and perhaps due to the cost involved, those installations were delayed,” he said. According to Mr. Ackah, the inferno could have been contained much earlier if the necessary water systems were available. He further lamented that some members of the public obstructed fire personnel during the operation, which also slowed response efforts. The GNFS spokesperson emphasised that the incident underscores the urgent need for stricter enforcement of fire safety regulations and increased public education on emergency response protocols. The devastating fire completely destroyed the mall, which housed several shops dealing in groceries, electronics, and household items. Billows of smoke were visible from several kilometres away as firefighters battled the flames for hours. Despite the extensive damage, authorities confirmed that there were no casualties. The E-Waste Fund has begun stakeholder engagement with scrap dealers in the Ashanti Region as part of a nationwide rollout of its electronic waste (e-waste) collection program aimed at promoting environmentally sustainable recycling practices. Speaking during an engagement session in Kumasi, the Deputy Fund Administrator of E-Waste Fund, Amos Blessing Amorse, explained that the initiative, which has already been piloted in Accra and parts of the Eastern Region, seeks to build an environmentally friendly society by managing e-waste in a safer and more sustainable manner. “Having piloted the scheme successfully, we believe the time has come to roll it out across the country. The Ashanti Region, being one of the rapidly growing areas, is a strategic place to start,” Amos Amorse said. He emphasized that effective implementation of the project requires collaboration with key stakeholders, particularly scrap dealers, who play a central role in waste collection and recycling. “We’ve moved beyond the stage where scrap dealers collect and burn items, polluting the environment. Through the E-Waste Fund and the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, we are establishing collection centers where these items will be gathered and sent to approved recyclers for proper treatment,” he added. Amorse Amos noted that the initiative will benefit both local assemblies and scrap dealers. Municipal assemblies will be able to regulate scrap activities within their jurisdictions and generate internal revenue, while scrap dealers will gain additional income by collecting e-waste items that were previously considered valueless. “This not only boosts their income but also reduces the volume of waste that ends up in landfills. For us as a fund, our primary goal is to protect human health and the environment,” he said. He further highlighted that proper recycling would create employment opportunities for recyclers and upscalers who reuse recovered materials, extending the life cycle of electronic products. The Monitoring and Evaluation Head at E-Waste Fund, Mr. Gerald Adu-Gyamfi, also underscored the importance of the initiative, stating that it aligns with national policies on sustainable environmental management. Meanwhile, the Environmental Health Officer for the Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly, Ebenezer Yeboah, expressed optimism that the project would significantly reduce pollution caused by open burning of electronic waste. “This initiative will help us cut down smoke pollution, which has been a major nuisance in our municipality. It also brings sustainability because we’re educating scrap dealers on how to operate responsibly,” Mr. Yeboah said. He added that the assembly plans to intensify public education and sensitization campaigns to encourage residents to adopt environmentally friendly waste management practices. “We will continue to engage communities to help them understand the need to protect the environment and maintain a clean and safe place to live,” he concluded. The nationwide e-waste collection project forms part of Ghana’s broader efforts to address the growing challenge of electronic waste management while creating green jobs and safeguarding public health. At least three people have reportedly sustained gunshot injuries following a violent clashes between the Police and some persons alleged to be followers of embattled Asamankese Chief Osabarima Adu Darko II, over burial of six Royals from opposing faction- Akua Korang Akwamu Royal Family at the royals cemetery. The incident which occured Sunday October 26,2025 at the precinct of Asamankese Chief Palace in Eastern Region, also led to destruction of some Police vehicles. According to reports, tension had been brewing between the Akua Korang Akwamu Abrade Royal Family and embattled Chief of Asamankese- Osabarima Adu Darko II over the burial and funeral rites of their deceased royals, which began on Thursday and were expected to end on Wednesday. The embattled Chief of Asamankese, Osabarima Adu Darko II, is said to have sought a court injunction to stop the burial, opposing the interment of the deceased at the royal cemetery by his rivals - Osabarima Kantinka Pobi Asomani. The Eastern South Police Command which has however maintained heavy presence in the community received intelligence that a group of suspected trouble makers had illegally assembled in and around the palace and were plotting an attack to disrupt the burial. An attempt by the police to intervene and prevent the planned violence, however, escalated into chaos, resulting in the destruction of police vehicles and gunfire that left three people injured. Reinforcement teams were quickly deployed to restore calm in the area. Police say investigations are ongoing into the incident.It is has however not been established if any arrest was made. The incident is underpinned by long standing chieftaincy dispute in Asamankese. About a month ago , the Royal Akua Korang Akwamu Abrade Family of Asamankese in Eastern Region called on government to immediately resume resolution to bring finality to the long-standing chieftaincy dispute in the area. At a press conference, the family expressed frustration that despite securing judgments and rulings from competent judicial and traditional bodies, including the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs Judicial Committee, the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council Judicial Committee, and the High Court in Koforidua, the decisions have not been executed. According to the family, previous efforts by the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs under the past government following a petition created a platform for dialogue, but such engagements have stalled under the current administration. The family says a petition sent earlier this year to the new government and copied to relevant institutions is yet to receive a response. Osabarima Kentinka Pobi Asomaning who claim to be legitimate Chief of Asamankese said Royal Akua Korang lineage remains the undisputed custodian of Asamankese lands, with only a one-third arrangement with the Overlord of Akyem Abuakwa, and therefore no person outside the family can legitimately ascend the Asamankese Divisional Stool. He further alleged that a rival claimant to the stool calling himself Osabarima Adu Darko II is not a true member of the lineage and is relying on alleged fraudulent gazette. The family insists that the dully installed chief of Asamankese is Osabarima Kentinka Pobi Asomaning, in accordance with the Chieftaincy Act. Warning against attempts to alter inheritance procedures, the family referenced the historical creation of the Asamankese Division through a colonial Executive Instrument in the 1930s and 1940s, specifically for the Akua Korang Abrade Family. The family therefore urged government and state institutions to enforce the decisions of the rightful bodies to safeguard peace and stability in Asamankese. The week-long operation was carried out along the River Bankra, which connects to the Offin River, spanning parts of the Ahafo Ano South West, Ahafo North, and Atwima Mponua Districts. This decisive action forms part of the Association’s firm commitment to support the Government of Ghana’s ongoing fight against illegal mining, particularly activities that destroy river bodies and threaten our water resources and environment. Speaking on behalf of the Association, Mr. Michael Kwadwo Peprah, President of NCSSMAG, reaffirmed the Association’s dedication to promoting responsible and sustainable small-scale mining practices across the country. He emphasized that the exercise was also aimed at self-regulation — ensuring that members of the Association adhere strictly to environmental and mining laws while protecting the reputation of the legitimate small-scale mining sector. “We, the legitimate small-scale miners, are deeply concerned about the negative image being created by the activities of illegal miners who continue to destroy our rivers and lands. Their actions are undermining our credibility and the collective efforts of responsible miners who are contributing to national development,” Mr. Peprah stated. He further urged all individuals and groups engaged in illegal mining on river bodies to immediately halt their operations and seek regularization through the appropriate authorities. “We call on all illegal miners to stop mining on river bodies with immediate effect. The Association remains committed to collaborating with the government and other stakeholders to protect our natural resources and sustain the livelihoods of Ghanaians who depend on legal small-scale mining,” he added.
