The Metro Engineer for the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Oheneba Atta Poku, has appealed to residents of Kumasi to adjust to recent changes in the city’s road system, including the installation of new traffic lights.
Speaking on Abusua FM in an interview with host Ebenezer Yaw Jona, popularly known as Osempakani, Eng. Atta Poku said the measures were introduced to improve safety for both pedestrians and motorists in the Ashanti Regional capital.
“The newly mounted traffic lights are to protect pedestrians and regulate the movement of vehicles in the regional capital,” he said.
He explained that traffic lights were recently installed at Sofo Line following the relocation of the main entrance of Prempeh College. According to him, the changes made the area busier and increased safety concerns, particularly for students of Prempeh Basic School and patients and visitors to the nearby Suntreso Government Hospital.
“There was no traffic light at Sofo Line before, but when the main entrance of Prempeh College was relocated, it became necessary to ensure safety,” he said. “There would have been chaos if we had not installed traffic lights there.”
Mr Atta Poku acknowledged that some motorists have expressed frustration over the reduced free flow of traffic but stressed that city authorities have a responsibility to ensure public safety.
“I know people have concerns because they are no longer enjoying the normal free flow of traffic. However, it is the responsibility of city management to protect everyone in Kumasi,” he added.
The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly has in recent months undertaken a number of road and traffic management interventions aimed at reducing congestion and improving safety in the city.
