The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has arrested a British female passenger at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) for attempting to traffic 17.72 kilograms of cannabis to the United Kingdom.
The arrest, which took place on May 18, marks the second drug-related incident involving a British national at KIA within 24 hours.
The suspect was intercepted while boarding British Airways flight BA 2066 from Accra to London Gatwick. A search of her luggage revealed 32 slabs of compressed substances suspected to be cannabis.
A field test confirmed the contents as cannabis, and the total weight was recorded at 17.72kg. She is currently in NACOC custody as investigations continue.

This arrest closely follows another significant drug seizure on the same day, involving a British male passenger who arrived in Accra from Thailand via Dubai on Emirates flight EK 787. Authorities discovered 92 slabs of cannabis, weighing a total of 53.6 kilograms, concealed in two suitcases.
Further investigations into the earlier case led to the arrest of two additional suspects: a customs officer and a porter assigned to the airport’s Commercially Important Person (CIP) section. Both individuals are suspected of facilitating the trafficking attempt.
These back-to-back incidents highlight a concerning trend in international drug trafficking through Ghana’s main airport. NACOC has reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying surveillance and strengthening collaboration with airport security and other law enforcement agencies to curb the trafficking of narcotics.
Investigations into both cases are ongoing.
