Asanko Gold Ghana Ltd has confirmed a violent confrontation between military personnel and community members at its concession near Mpatoam in the Amansie South District of the Ashanti Region, resulting in one fatality and significant damage to mining equipment.
According to a company statement, the incident occurred during a military security operation coordinated through the Ghana Chamber of Mines.
Tensions escalated within the local community, leading to civil unrest, an attack on military camps, and an invasion of mining operational areas.
“The Company shares in the community’s grief over the tragic loss of life and extends its heartfelt condolences to the affected families during this difficult time,” Asanko Gold Ghana stated.
Management said it is working closely with local authorities, government officials, and community leaders to de-escalate tensions and find a resolution.
The company reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining “constructive dialogue with all stakeholders” as investigations continue.
Asanko Gold Ghana indicated that further updates will be provided once investigations into the incident are complete.
