The Ashanti Youth Association (AYA) has strongly criticized the government for what it describes as ongoing disregard for the dignity and interests of the Asante Kingdom.
In a press release issued Tuesday, AYA accused the ruling administration of favoring controversial media personality Kevin Taylor and Bono traditional leader Dormaahene, while sidelining concerns of the Ashanti people.
According to the release, signed by AYA President Dr. Ronald A. Ofori and Vice President for Operations Hon. Nana Oppong Boadi, the group has endured persistent provocation from individuals like Dormaahene and Kevin Taylor. The statement describes Taylor, a U.S.-based Ghanaian commentator, as “a national nuisance” known for insulting revered Ghanaian figures including chiefs, clergy, and business leaders.
AYA claims his return to Ghana was facilitated by National Security and backed by elements within the current government.
“The same government that gained massive electoral support from the Ashanti Region has now offered protection to someone who has consistently insulted our leaders and traditions,” the statement read.
AYA also questioned the fairness of state institutions, alleging that the Attorney General and the Acting Chief Justice bypassed due process to secure favorable rulings for Taylor.
“Constitutional protocols were seemingly bypassed under the guise of an emergency,” the release said, suggesting a coordinated effort to protect individuals hostile to Asanteman.
The group further expressed concern over the neglect of conflict-prone areas like Bawku, Nkwanta in the Volta Region, and Asawase in Kumasi.
“Why are their lives not afforded the same urgent protection as Kevin Taylor’s comfort?” the group asked.
AYA’s message also included a direct challenge to Ashanti politicians in the ruling party, urging them to break their silence and defend the Asante Kingdom. Drawing historical parallels, the group warned against betrayal and called for unity in protecting Asanteman’s legacy and its revered monarch, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
“We will not stand by and allow the dignity of Asanteman to be undermined by any individual or political force,” the group declared.
The release concluded with a firm stance: “The government must choose between Asanteman and Kevin Taylor. Between the dignity of the Asante Kingdom and the dishonor represented by Dormaahene.”
