The Bawku Senior High School has been shut down indefinitely following the fatal shooting of a final-year student, Hakim Kundima, on campus.
The closure was announced by the Bawku Municipal Education Directorate on Sunday, July 27, citing concerns for the safety of students and staff.
According to eyewitness accounts, the attack occurred around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 26. Unknown assailants reportedly scaled the school’s perimeter wall, stormed the dormitory, and dragged the 18-year-old student outside before shooting him in what appears to have been a targeted attack.
The perpetrators fled immediately after the incident. As of press time, no arrests had been made.
Tahiru Kundima, the victim’s elder brother, confirmed the incident to the media, revealing that the Bawku Divisional Police Commander personally transported Hakim’s body to the family. He alleged that the killing may be linked to the long-standing conflict in the Bawku area, which has experienced recurring violence in recent years.
The incident has sparked widespread fear, coming just hours after a separate attack at Nalerigu Senior High School, where two students were shot and killed by unidentified gunmen on the same evening. The twin attacks have raised urgent concerns about security in senior high schools across the region.
Authorities say investigations into the Bawku shooting are ongoing. No official information on the motive or identities of the attackers has been released.
