Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has accused former President John Mahama of deliberately avoiding a presidential debate ahead of the upcoming December elections. Dr. Bawumia claims that Mahama is hesitant because he fears his record as President will be exposed.
Speaking to supporters in Dansoman, Accra, on Monday evening [August 26], Dr. Bawumia reiterated his challenge for an open debate, asserting that Mahama’s reluctance stems from his inability to defend his past performance. “The former President knows he cannot compete because, in every sector of the economy, the records show that we have performed far better than him,” Bawumia told the enthusiastic crowd.
Dr. Bawumia highlighted several issues from Mahama’s presidency, including the four years of “dumsor” (persistent power outages), his failure to provide essential supplies like chalk to schools, his opposition to the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy, and the cancellation of teacher and nursing trainee allowances.
“We have not forgotten all these bad records. We are moving forward. We are making progress with digitalization. As President, he couldn’t provide chalk to schools, but we have provided laptops to senior high students. This is the progress the country has made, and we want to move forward and make it even better,” Dr. Bawumia concluded.
The crowd responded with cheers as Dr. Bawumia emphasized his commitment to continuing the progress the NPP claims to have achieved during their time in office.
