Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has urged aspirants in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) upcoming presidential primary to focus on ideas rather than insults as the race heats up ahead of the January 2026 vote.
Addressing more than 490 constituency youth organisers and their deputies who presented his nomination forms on Wednesday, August 13, Dr. Bawumia called for a decorous and issue-driven contest.
“I want this flagbearership election to be conducted with decorum,” he said. “We’re not in a campaign of insults, and we should not be. It should be about ideas ideas that will capture the imagination of Ghanaians.”
The former Vice President urged aspirants and their supporters to centre their campaigns on solutions to the country’s pressing challenges.
“What ideas do we have? What are we bringing to the table? How are we going to solve the problems Ghanaians face? Let us focus on marketing or selling our respective aspirants,” he advised.
Dr. Bawumia warned that personal attacks could harm the party’s unity and provide political ammunition to opponents.
“When we bring down other people, we bring down the party. Our opponents will take those messages and use them against us,” he noted.
He stressed his own commitment to avoiding negative campaigning. “You will never hear me insulting any aspirant.
After this election, we still have to contest the general election. If we divide ourselves today, we will struggle to unite tomorrow,” he said.
Dr. Bawumia concluded by appealing for solidarity throughout the primary process. “Let us begin the process with unity and end with unity, because that will bring victory in 2028.”
