A traditional installation ceremony turned tragic on Wednesday evening, June 18, 2025, when a man was shot dead during the enstoolment of an Asafohen (war chief) at Krodua, a community near Asamankese on the border of the Eastern and Central Regions.
The deceased, popularly known as Nana 31, was a former sub-chief from a neighboring town. He had reportedly been suspended from his role due to alleged acts of insubordination but was present at the ceremony to support the newly installed Asafohen.
According to eyewitnesses, the fatal shooting occurred while the chief was being carried in a procession through the town’s principal streets. Nana 31 was said to be walking behind a man carrying a firearm on his shoulder when the suspect suddenly discharged the weapon, hitting him in the head.
The shooter fled the scene, escaping into a nearby bush. As of Thursday morning, the suspect remains at large.
Police in Asamankese have confirmed receiving a report on the incident and have launched a manhunt for the suspect. Authorities are urging the public to come forward with any information that could assist in his arrest.
The body of the deceased has been transported to the Asamankese Government Hospital mortuary for autopsy and preservation.
