The Tafo Circuit Court in Kumasi has remanded two Chinese nationals arrested for illegal mining (galamsey) in the Hiawkose forest.
The suspects were apprehended by local youth while operating excavator machines at an illegal mining site alongside two Ghanaian accomplices who escape citizen’s arrest.
Following their arrest, the suspects were initially taken to the Antoakrom Police Station near Manso Nkwanta before being remanded into police custody on Wednesday, February 26, 2025.
The police prosecution team, citing incomplete investigations, requested that the suspects remain in custody to allow for further inquiries, including identifying the Ghanaian who allegedly hired them.
In a dramatic turn of events on Friday, March 7, 2025, the key suspect who had been on the run was arrested at the court premises through police intelligence.
Despite attempting to resist arrest, he was taken into custody.
Presenting the case in court, the prosecutor stated that the newly arrested suspect, identified as Kwakye Solomon, is believed to be the owner of the illegal mining site.
He added that Solomon’s capture could potentially lead to the release of the two Chinese nationals, shifting legal focus to the Ghanaian suspect.
The court granted the police prosecutors’ request for additional time and ordered that the two Chinese nationals remain in custody until their next court appearance on Tuesday, March 11, 2025.
To make prosecution easy the court also told prosecutor to ensure they get Chines language interpreter to facilitate effective communication between the suspects and the Court for fair trial.
