The final funeral rites for the late mother of the Obuasi West Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Faustilove Kannin, were disrupted on Saturday, November 29, 2025, after the Dompoasehene, Nana Kwabena Ponko, was shot in what police suspect to be an assassination attempt.
The incident occurred at the funeral grounds in Obuasi, throwing mourners into panic. According to eyewitnesses, the chief had just taken his seat when an unidentified assailant opened fire, striking him.
Nana Kwabena Ponko was immediately rushed to the Obuasi Government Hospital for emergency treatment. While authorities have not issued an official update on his condition, sources at the facility indicate that he was stabilised upon arrival. Residents and traditional leaders in the area are anxiously awaiting further information.
Security personnel and attendees at the event acted swiftly to apprehend a suspected shooter. The individual was handed over to the Ghana Police Service and is currently in custody to assist with investigations.
Police have cordoned off the scene and launched a full-scale inquiry to determine the motive behind the attack, which remains unclear. Officers are expected to rely on witness accounts and evidence gathered from the grounds to piece together the events leading up to the shooting.
