Former Education Minister Dr. Osei Yaw Adutwum has urged delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) across Ghana to consider him the strongest candidate to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.
Speaking on Hello FM in Kumasi, in an interview with King Edward monitored by Kumasimail, Dr. Adutwum acknowledged the credentials of all aspirants but emphasized his own suitability: “All respected members who have declared their intention to lead the party deserve consideration. However, I stand tall”.
He outlined his top priority should he become flagbearer and, ultimately, president: transforming Ghana’s economy through education, aiming to catalyze trade, industrialization, and agriculture powered by technology.
“As a country, we have not sufficiently encouraged individual businesspeople and citizens to develop their private enterprises,” he said.
Drawing inspiration from Ghana’s Cocoa peak era, Dr. Adutwum pointed out the economic and social benefits realized when farmers pooled resources: “They built the Okuafo Hall at Legon through farmers’ contributions. Many houses in Kumasi were built by farmers. When private business thrives, the country benefits.”
He also announced the coming launch of his strategic economic development plan, promising a detailed blueprint for national transformation.
Proven Track Record in Education
As Ghana’s Minister of Education under President Nana Akufo‑Addo first as Deputy Minister for four years and later as substantive Minister Dr. Adutwum was key member of implementation key educational reforms, such as Free Senior High School (SHS) which expanded access to secondary education, leading to record enrollment.
Teacher Development: Enhanced in-service training and welfare, improving teacher motivation and performance.
Digital Innovations: Introduced EdTech platforms to support remote learning, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
These achievements significantly raised national student performance and expanded education’s reach.
Dr. Adutwum, a respected elder of the Church of Pentecost, is one of five aspirants planning to contest in the NPP’s flagbearer race scheduled for January 2026.
Dr. Adutwum’s public communication skills and strong performance record have even prompted calls from within the party for consideration as vice-presidential running mate during the 2024 elections.
In the wake of the NPP’s disappointing 2024 defeat to the National Democratic Congress, voices across the party are urging Dr. Adutwum to vie for the leadership mantle, reflecting widespread confidence in his vision and capabilities.
