Dr. Sofo Tanko Rashid Computer, the acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), has disclosed that approximately 300 tablets procured under the previous administration have been left unused in a warehouse.
He said “Some procurements were made about three years ago and were dumped in the warehouse without a clear purpose”
Dr Computer added “In our stock, we had almost 300 tablets that have gone to waste.”
Speaking to Joynews, Dr. Computer expressed frustration over the situation, stating that such procurements are meant to enhance the teaching and learning process, not to be stored in warehouses.
“I don’t understand the motive behind this action. When you procure laptops or desktops, they are meant for specific purposes to be sent to schools, set up for teachers and students to enhance the teaching and learning process.
“However, they should not be dumped in warehouses. Unfortunately, some of them have gone bad. What I saw was so disturbing that I was deeply annoyed”, he expressed his frustration.
He noted that many of these gadgets have surpassed their lifespan and cannot be used or repaired, necessitating their disposal through auction.
Dr. Computer explained “They cannot be used because, as you know, these gadgets have a lifespan. The mobile phones we use have a lifespan as well, but people often don’t realize this. When they reach the end of their lifespan, they can no longer be used, even if you send them for repair.
“Similarly, when you procure tablets and fail to monitor their lifespan, then store them in a warehouse without proper ventilation or a lighting system, it’s likely they will be destroyed. That’s why many of them are beyond use, and we have no choice but to auction them off and dispose of them”, he lamented.
