The Electoral Commission (EC) is today conducting a re-run of the Ablekuma North parliamentary election in 19 polling stations following disruptions that marred the collation process during the 2024 general elections.

The affected polling stations had their parliamentary results pink sheets either damaged or rendered invalid due to chaos that erupted at the constituency’s collation center.

Initially, the EC reported that only three polling stations were impacted and proposed to re-collate those results under tight security.

However, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) disputed the EC’s position, arguing that the scope of the disruption was more widespread.

After several failed attempts to resolve the issue amicably, the EC was compelled to organize a re-run in all 19 polling stations to bring finality to the matter.

Despite the EC’s decision, the re-run has not been without controversy. The General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, at a press conference, announced the party’s withdrawal from the re-run in protest of the EC’s handling of the situation.

In a surprising twist, the NPP’s parliamentary candidate, Akua Afriyie, defied the party’s directive and declared her intention to contest in the re-run.

Her move has raised questions about internal unity and the authority of the party’s General Secretary.

Ahead of today’s vote, Akua Afriyie has received open support from several influential figures within the NPP, including Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, MP Kennedy Agyapong, and Minister of Food and Agriculture Bryan Acheampong signaling strong grassroots and elite backing despite the party’s official position.

The re-run is taking place across the following 19 polling stations in the constituency:

  1. God First International School, Darkuman – Nyamekye
  2. Pentecost Church Mount Zion Assembly – Kwashieman
  3. DVLA Office, Awoshie Adamami – Awoshie
  4. Asiedu Gyeudu Memorial School – Awoshie
  5. Living Spring Day Nursery – Been To
  6. The Lord’s Pentecostal Church – Kwashie Bu
  7. Presby Church, Odorkor – Tsuimami
  8. Church of Pentecost, North Odorkor (2) – Tsuimami
  9. Church of Pentecost, North Odorkor (4) – Tsuimami
  10. Methodist Church, Odorkor – Tsuimami
  11. St. John the Baptist Catholic Church – Tsuimami
  12. Radiantway Preparatory School – Tsuimami
  13. Ateco School Complex – Tsuimami
  14. South Odorkor 4&5 School – Otaten
  15. Pentecost Church, Tweneboa – Otaten
  16. Light of Gospel Miracle Chapel, Tweneboa – Akwei Bu
  17. MTTD Odorkor Divisional Station – Akwei Bu
  18. Roman Catholic Church, Busia Junction – Sakaman
  19. Bethel Baptist Church – Sakaman

Security has been tightened across the affected polling stations to ensure a peaceful and credible re-run. The outcome of today’s vote is expected to resolve the stalemate and determine the final parliamentary representative for Ablekuma North.
