Engineers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) under the Ashanti Sub-Transmission Unit have averted a potential major revenue loss after swiftly responding to a power system fault that threatened prolonged outages for customers in parts of the Western North Region.
The incident occurred at about 12:13 a.m. on January 31, 2026, when a fault developed on GRIDCo Transformer Two (T2) at the Asawinso Bulk Supply Point (BSP), resulting in power outages across several communities, including Awaso, Dwenase, Sefwi Wiawso, New Obuasi, Jejetreso and adjoining areas.
Efforts to restore power through the Joaboso BSP, the nearest alternative supply point, were unsuccessful due to poor power quality, raising concerns about sustained customer downtime and its potential impact on businesses and households.
In response to the escalating situation, a team of Ashanti Sub-Transmission engineers based in Kumasi was deployed. The team departed Kumasi at about 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 1, 2026, arriving in Asawinso two hours later to begin emergency restoration works.
Working overnight under challenging conditions, the engineers dismantled and rerouted high-voltage cables from the faulty transformer to an alternative transformer, T3. Using touch lights, the team successfully transferred the load and stabilised the system, restoring reliable power supply by about 8:00 a.m. the following morning.
The timely intervention prevented a prolonged outage, safeguarded significant revenue for ECG, and ensured the continuity of economic activities in the affected communities.
Commending the engineers, the General Manager for Ashanti Sub-Transmission, Ing. Peter Kofi Fletcher, praised their dedication and sacrifice on behalf of management and the company.
“Your selfless dedication to duty has not only brought relief to households and businesses, but it has also saved the company from substantial revenue loss and strengthened ECG’s image as a responsive and reliable service provider,” he said.
The Asawinso BSP is one of the key substations under the operational oversight of ECG’s Ashanti Sub-Transmission in the Western North Region.
The intervention team comprised Joseph Opoku, who led the team, alongside Samuel Adongo, Prosper Boadi Kudzo, Isaac Sarfo and Oscar Karikari, who worked together with regional counterparts to stabilise the power system.
