The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has directed school authorities across the country not to hesitate in dismissing students who flout the Ghana Education Service’s (GES) disciplinary code.
His directive follows a recent surge in student misconduct in some schools, including a disturbing incident at the SDA Senior High School in Kumasi where a student was shot in the eye.
Speaking during a press briefing at the Presidency as part of a mid-year review of the education sector, Minister Iddrisu emphasized that the government is committed to upholding both academic excellence and moral discipline in schools.
“The government under President John Mahama has given the Ghana Education Service full authority to take firm action, including dismissal, where necessary. Students who show blatant disregard for discipline should not be accommodated in our schools,” the minister said.
He criticized past leniency and stressed that the current administration would not tolerate any actions that compromise school safety or the moral training of students.
“Instances where students bring weapons to school or attack others are unacceptable. The responsibility to raise disciplined children is shared between parents, teachers, and school authorities,” he added.
Iddrisu also highlighted the importance of collaboration between the Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) and school administrations in fostering discipline and maintaining a safe learning environment.
As part of broader reforms, the minister mentioned that disciplinary education would be reinforced in the curriculum, and students would be given a clear understanding of consequences tied to misconduct.
He urged school authorities to act decisively and warned that schools must not allow a few rogue elements to undermine the integrity and mission of the country’s education system.
