The Coordination Director of the Ejura Municipal Assembly, Mrs. Louisa Banon has assured the public of ongoing efforts to restore peace and ensure justice after the tragic demise of a 22-year-old man in police custody sparked violent protests, culminating in the burning of the Ejura District Police Command.
Speaking in an interview with Kumasimail.com, the director described steps taken by local authorities, including engaging the bereaved family, assessing the circumstances surrounding the incident, and addressing public concerns.
“We visited the family to console them and hear their grievances. We assured them of a thorough investigation into the matter and promised that justice will be pursued,” the director stated.
To contain the situation, additional police reinforcements were deployed from regional headquarters, including Mumbai, to protect property and ensure public safety. The Municipal Security Council convened to deliberate on the incident, its causes, and potential measures to prevent recurrence.
“We discussed what led to the tragic events, reviewed recommendations, and forwarded them to our superiors for action. While we understand the pain and anger in the community, we must emphasize the need to avoid taking the law into one’s own hands,” the director said.
The issue of imposing a curfew was raised during deliberations but was ultimately dismissed. Authorities expressed confidence that the situation would not escalate further, citing ongoing community engagement efforts and the involvement of influential figures, including the Member of Parliament for the area.
Condemning the violence, the director emphasized the importance of resolving grievances through dialogue rather than destructive actions. “When you are angry, it doesn’t mean you should destroy property or harm others. We must condemn such acts,” the director said.
Community leaders have initiated educational campaigns to encourage calm and highlight proper channels for addressing disputes. Authorities remain hopeful that tensions will subside with these efforts, paving the way for gradual reconciliation.
As investigations continue, residents are urged to cooperate with authorities to uncover the facts behind the 22-year-old’s death and to restore harmony within the community.
