The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has promised Ghanaians that his administration will maintain the Free Senior High School (SHS) program and provide the necessary funds to make it sustainable.
Speaking on his policies on Monday, November 11, 2024, during a meeting with the clergy in Kumasi, Mahama denied rumours that, if elected, he would abolish Free SHS, describing the assertions as a “political trick” intended to deceive the public.
Mahama reiterated that “Free SHS has come to stay,” emphasizing that while the initiative has made education more accessible, his government will funding a priority.
“We must ensure it is well-funded to improve its quality and keep it going.”
Mr. Mahama’s statement demonstrates the NDC’s dedication to the Free SHS policy with an emphasis on gaining stable financing to deal with the program’s difficulties.
This position follows the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) and the NDC’s reaffirmation of support for the policy, although they have different opinions on how to improve its execution and quality.
Mahama highlighted the value of high-quality education and promised free SHS financing, pointing out that a program with sufficient money will improve educational results.
He gave Ghanaians his word that Free SHS will not only survive but also grow under his direction to better serve the requirements of coming generations.
