The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) has appealed to the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) to reconsider its decision to embark on a nationwide strike, scheduled to begin on Thursday, November 7, 2024.
The Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) announced a nationwide strike set to commence on November 7, 2024, due to unresolved salary and conditions of service issues.
This declaration follows a press release issued on November 4, where CLOGSAG expressed frustration over the government’s failure to finalize a new salary structure by the October 31 deadline.
The FWSC emphasized that ongoing discussions and proposed solutions are in place to address CLOGSAG’s concerns, and that abandoning the strike would pave the way for productive negotiations.
According to the FWSC, CLOGSAG’s decision to bypass established protocols by directly addressing demands to the Office of the Senior Presidential Advisor undermines the negotiation process.
The commission highlighted previous commitments made during negotiations, stressing that these agreements should be respected.
This development comes after CLOGSAG announced its intention to strike, citing unresolved issues regarding salary structures and conditions of service.
The FWSC has reassured that it is committed to finding a resolution, but urges CLOGSAG to return to the negotiation table.
CLOGSAG’s demands for a new salary structure and improved conditions of service have been ongoing.
The association initially submitted their proposals to the Office of the Senior Presidential Advisor for consideration and approval.
A Technical Committee was formed to discuss the proposed salary adjustments, but progress has been slow.
Implications of the Strike
The nationwide strike is expected to impact local government services across Ghana, potentially disrupting essential services.
The FWSC has warned that embarking on strike action would cause delays in negotiations, as engagement cannot continue while a party is on strike.
