The Deputy Majority Chief Whip, Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe Ghansah, has asserted that the Ghana Air Force (GAF) Z-9 helicopter accident, which claimed eight lives, was caused by an explosion in the air rather than a conventional crash.
Speaking in an interview with Accra based Okay FM, monitored by Kumasi Mail Madam Ghansah said available evidence from the scene suggested that the aircraft exploded before it reached the ground.
“The aircraft blasted; it did not crash,” she stated. “With crashes we’ve seen in the past, the aircraft is usually found at a specific location, along with the victims.
But in this case, the wreckage was scattered, and the victims were found in different places. We are told some were discovered in a deep valley.”
She questioned how victims wearing seatbelts could have ended up far apart, adding that the unusual distribution of debris pointed to an in-air explosion.
The Deputy Majority Chief Whip expressed hope that the findings from the helicopter’s black box, which has already been retrieved, will provide clarity on the cause of the incident.
