The Ghana Education Service (GES) has held a crisis meeting to address incidents of violence and assault recorded during ongoing inter-school sports competitions in parts of the Central Region.
The meeting, convened on Monday, February 23, 2026, was led by the Director-General of GES, Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis, and members of the Service’s management team. It followed reports of clashes involving students during sporting events in some districts.
A delegation from the Central Region, led by the Regional Director of Education, Dr. Mrs. Juliette Dufie Otami, briefed management on eyewitness accounts of the incidents. The team outlined what transpired, examined the causes of the disturbances, detailed immediate interventions taken and proposed additional measures to strengthen safety and security at future inter-school competitions.
Also present at the meeting were municipal and district directors of education, heads of affected senior high schools, sports coordinators, public relations officers, some of the students involved and their parents. The Technical Advisor to the Minister for Education, Prof. George K.T. Oduro, attended as well.
Prof. Davis unequivocally condemned the acts of violence and expressed dissatisfaction with what he described as the high level of aggression displayed by some students. He said such conduct undermines the principles of discipline, sportsmanship and mutual respect that school competitions are designed to promote.
He stressed that school sports serve as platforms for discovering and nurturing talent while fostering unity among institutions. According to him, with football and traditional games becoming increasingly lucrative, students with passion and talent must be properly guided and supported to pursue successful careers in sports.
The Director-General endorsed the Central Regional Director’s decision to suspend all sporting activities in the affected areas pending thorough investigations into the incidents.
GES management also dismissed reports circulating in sections of the media claiming that a student had died as a result of the violence. Officials said no fatalities were recorded and confirmed that the student who had been erroneously reported dead was present at the meeting. Other students who had been hospitalised have since been discharged and are receiving medical attention.
Management further disclosed that the alleged perpetrators of the assaults have been arrested and are assisting the police with investigations.
Prof. Davis stated that any student found culpable after investigations would face appropriate sanctions in accordance with the laws of Ghana and the regulations of the Ghana Education Service.
