The Ghana Education Service (GES) has strongly rejected claims by former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, who attributed the poor performance of students in the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) to unsupportive management practices within GES.
In a recent address to New Patriotic Party (NPP) delegates, Dr. Adutwum argued that previous administrations provided crucial interventions, including motivation allowances paid to teachers, which have since been discontinued under the current government.
He linked the lack of these allowances to the decline in students’ results.
However, GES dismissed these assertions as false. In an official statement, the service clarified that no allowances to teachers have been cancelled, countering Dr. Adutwum’s accusations.
The statement stated, “It is not true that the GES has cancelled any allowances due teachers as claimed by Dr. Adutwum in his engagement with some media houses.”
The statement referenced the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD), which had earlier explained the reasons for the non-payment of teachers’ November allowances, highlighting that these issues are administrative and not driven by GES policies.
Further, GES urged the public not to be swayed by the former minister’s comments, describing them as an attempt to deflect responsibility for challenges faced during his tenure in managing the examination process.
“GES urges the public to disregard the statements made by the former Minister, Dr. Adutwum regarding the 2025 WASSCE results and treat them as an attempt to shift focus from his shortcomings in managing the examination process,” the statement added.
By setting the record straight, GES aims to encourage a balanced and factual discussion on the factors affecting the 2025 WASSCE outcomes, emphasizing accountability within the education sector.
