The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has announced plans to significantly expand and modernize facilities at Accra International Airport as part of efforts to enhance passenger experience and ease congestion.
The announcement was made on X (formerly Twitter) by the Minister in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu who outlined a series of infrastructure projects set to begin later this year.

Central to the expansion is the construction of a new seven-storey car park with a capacity for 2,000 vehicles. This development is expected to address longstanding congestion challenges at Terminal 3, where the existing parking facility accommodates 513 cars and often becomes overwhelmed during peak travel periods.
In addition to the parking expansion, the project will introduce a range of new amenities aimed at improving convenience and comfort for travelers. Plans include a 4,000-square-meter retail complex featuring shops and restaurants, as well as a sky-view lounge that will allow visitors to observe aircraft takeoffs and landings.

The development will also feature a dual-purpose airport hotel comprising a 250-room budget facility and a 120-room luxury hotel. The hotels are intended to serve passengers requiring overnight accommodation, particularly those affected by flight delays or cancellations.
Further additions include a conference facility and business center, positioning the airport as a hub not only for travel but also for corporate and commercial activities.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts by GACL to modernize airport infrastructure and align Ghana’s aviation sector with international standards.
Construction on the new facilities is expected to commence this year, although a specific timeline for completion has not yet been disclosed.
