The Ghana High Commission has issued a safety advisory to Ghanaian nationals in Johannesburg, warning of heightened tensions following a protest in the central business district (CBD).
In a statement dated Wednesday, 29 April 2026, the Commission said the demonstration linked to concerns over unemployment and undocumented foreign nationals has already caused significant traffic disruptions and interruptions to normal business activities in the city centre.
The advisory cautioned that the situation poses an increased risk, particularly for foreign nationals, and urged residents to exercise vigilance throughout the day.
“It is advisable to avoid the Johannesburg CBD unless travel there is absolutely necessary,” the statement said, adding that those living in the area should remain indoors or in secure locations and limit unnecessary movement.
The Commission also urged members of the Ghanaian community to avoid engaging with protesters under any circumstances, even if provoked, and to prioritise their personal safety. It emphasised the importance of carrying valid identification and relevant documentation at all times.
Parents and guardians were advised to ensure children remain in safe environments and avoid travel through affected areas, while community members were encouraged to stay in close contact and check on vulnerable individuals.
The statement further called on the public to share only verified information and to remain calm and alert as the situation develops.
“The priority at all times is the safety and well-being of every member of our community,” the Commission said.
