A 43-year-old Ghanaian woman, Alberta Obinim, was tragically stabbed to death by her 22-year-old son in Manchester, United Kingdom, on the night of Sunday, August 18, 2024. The incident occurred following a domestic dispute at their home in the Gorton area.
Ms. Obinim, a mother of four, succumbed to multiple stab wounds at the scene. Her husband, Elder Joshua, a 64-year-old church elder at the Baptist Church in Manchester, and their 17-year-old daughter also sustained severe injuries during the attack. Both remain in critical condition at the hospital, with no immediate prospects of discharge.
The attack took place at a property on Barnard Road in Gorton at around 11:20 p.m. on Sunday. Emergency services arrived to find all three victims suffering from serious stab wounds. Despite efforts to save her, Ms. Obinim was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 22-year-old son has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in police custody.
Local community members have expressed their shock and sorrow over the incident. Mr. Abu, a family friend, described Ms. Obinim as “a very nice lady” who was “a mother to everyone.” Derrick Wiafe, another friend, remembered her as a “powerful and inspirational woman.”
Detective Superintendent Toby Facey of Greater Manchester Police said, “We understand that the local community and those across Greater Manchester will be rightly shocked and concerned after waking up to this tragic news this morning.
Our thoughts remain with those affected and their loved ones at this difficult time. We are doing all we can to support them.” The police investigation is ongoing.
