As the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) heads to the polls, today, 30th June, 2025, all eyes are on the candidates vying to lead the Association into its next chapter.
Campaign slogans have echoed across newsrooms, promises have been made, and visions shared. But beyond the speeches and manifestos lies a critical question of knowing candidates contesting for national positions and the portfolios which are being contested.
Incumbent President and Managing Editor of Daily and Business Analyst newspapers Albert Kwabena Dwumfuor, faces a stiff competition from a first-time contender Charles Yao Mawusi who is a Development Communications strategist with more than 20 years’ experience in journalism.
The race for the Vice President is a two-horse contest, with both aspirants bringing prior experience from the Association’s Public Affairs management.
Unlike three years ago when the slot went unopposed, this year it has become a keenly contested battleground between GBC’s Editor-in-Chief, Rebecca Ekpe, and Mary Mensah of the Daily Graphic.
GBC’s Editor in Chief Dominic Hlordzi hits it off with Multimedia’s Akwasi Agyemang for General Secretary. Assistant Manager at GTV, Theodora Amedetor Yakunu, is going head-to-head with Bertha Badu-Agyei of the Ghana News Agency in the contest for Treasurer.
In the case of Organizing Secretary Eastern Regional Chairman of the GJA Maxwell Kudeko battles it out with Daily Graphic’s Suleiman Mustapha, whereas GNA’s Caesar Abagali, makes a comeback after a loss three years ago by taking on Freelance Journalist Zadok Kwame Gyesi for Public Affairs.
Undoubtedly, the surge in enthusiasm to grab the six national positions, reflect a growing desire for reform, stronger representation, and a more responsive leadership that speaks to the evolving needs of media practitioners in Ghana.
From experienced newsroom leaders to dynamic voices advocating reform, the race reflects a diverse blend of ideas and ambitions, all aimed at strengthening journalism in Ghana.
