Ghana’s Ministry of Health has maintained that recent postings of newly licensed medical officers remain unchanged and has given those yet to report to duty until Friday, December 12, 2025, to take up their assigned stations.
In an update issued in Accra on Wednesday, the Ministry said it appreciates the many medical officers who have already reported and settled into their facilities across the country. Officials say the deployment is designed to ensure equitable distribution of the health workforce, especially to underserved communities.
“This is not punitive. It is a necessary measure to make sure all regions receive adequate medical personnel,” Tony Goodman, spokesperson for the Ministry of Health, said in the statement.
The Ministry is also urging families to encourage officers to accept their postings, while calling on Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives to provide support packages including accommodation and transport to make rural postings more attractive. According to the Ministry, such incentives form part of its human resource deployment strategy and are key to retaining professionals outside major cities.
Turning to concerns from the nursing fraternity, the Ministry announced that more than 6,000 newly recruited nurses have now been paid. This represents a significant portion of the 13,500 nurses recruited nationwide. Authorities say all outstanding administrative processes are being worked on to ensure full salary clearance for the remaining group.
“We are committed to strengthening the health workforce and ensuring every health professional gets what is due them,” Goodman added.
The Ministry reaffirmed its pledge to improve working conditions and deliver equitable quality healthcare across Ghana.
