The Government of Ghana has announced tougher security measures in Bawku and surrounding areas following a recent surge in violence linked to the long-standing chieftaincy conflict.
In a press statement issued by the Presidency on Sunday, July 27, the government confirmed that it is moving from a peacekeeping approach to active peace enforcement to prevent further bloodshed and restore order.
The Ghana Armed Forces have been deployed to maintain law and order, with intensified curfews now in effect to safeguard lives and property.
“We assure the public that the Ghana Armed Forces will take all necessary measures to protect lives and property,” the statement read.
The government also commended the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for his mediation efforts and acknowledged the contributions of Nayiri and Zugraana in the peace process.
Officials noted that recent killings threatened to derail progress that had nearly resolved the conflict.
Residents have been urged to cooperate fully with the Ghana Armed Forces and to refrain from acts of violence.
“While regretting the inconvenience this peace enforcement intervention may cause, the Government of Ghana remains committed to restoring peace and stability in Bawku and other affected areas,” the statement added.
Authorities reiterated that ensuring the safety of all residents including students remains a top priority as investigations and security operations continue.
