The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) has officially announced the suspension of the recently proposed 20% hike in public transport fares.
This decision follows a recent meeting between road transport operators and the Ministry of Transport, where concerns were raised over the lack of widespread consultation prior to the announcement of the fare adjustment.
In a joint statement released by key transport sector representatives, including the National Vice Chairman of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) Emmanuel Nii Ankrah and the General Secretary of GRTCC Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah, the suspension was confirmed as a result of stakeholders’ call for a more inclusive decision-making process.
The statement read: “On Wednesday, August 6, 2025, Road Transport Operators met with officials from the Ministry of Transport to discuss the purported 20% increment in public transport fares. Following deliberations, it was agreed to suspend the proposed fare increase due to the lack of broader consultations that are crucial to stakeholder acceptance.”
Instead of proceeding with the 20% increase, transport operators reaffirmed their commitment to enforcing the existing 15% fare reduction introduced on May 24, 2025.
All public transport operators have been urged to ensure compliance with the continuing fare reduction policy.
“We count on the cooperation of all transport operators and the general public to uphold the 15% fare reduction as previously instituted,” the statement added.
