The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, says he accepted responsibility for the party’s poor performance in the 2024 general election, describing it as a duty of leadership.
The NPP General Secretary who is seeking re-lection speaking on Kumasi base Lawson FM monitored by Kumasi Mail said he was aware that the party won the election, recognition might not necessarily have come his way.
However, he said he did not hesitate to assume responsibility when the outcome was unfavourable.
“I knew very well that if we had won, maybe I wouldn’t have been credited. But when we lost, I had to take responsibility,” he said.
He acknowledged that the months following the election were both emotionally and politically difficult. He and the NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate, Mahamudu Bawumia, faced what he described as intense criticism from sections of the public and party members.
Kodua Frimpong said maintaining composure during that period was essential to preserving party unity.
“If I had not shown emotional intelligence and acted maturely, the party would not have been where it is today,” he said, adding that he does not take personal attacks to heart.
According to him, unity within the NPP is gradually being restored.
He also defended the party leadership’s decision to hold internal elections, beginning with presidential primaries — a move that initially generated debate within party ranks.
Mr Kodua said members have since come to appreciate the reasoning behind that approach, and that cohesion within the party is improving.
He expressed optimism that if the current momentum continues, the NPP will be well positioned to return to power in the 2028 general election.
