The Institute of Climate and Environmental Governance (ICEG) is set to petition the World Bank and IMF in Ghana, urging them to influence the government to take stronger action against illegal mining, known locally as “galamsey.”
“Failure of which the these financial institutions should sanction through the suspension of funds earmarked for release to Ghana”, the statement signed by Emmanuel Gyan Ansah said.
ICEG argues that external pressure could enhance governmental efforts to mitigate environmental damage affecting water bodies, forests, and agriculture.
The press release emphasized that in November, ICEG plans to launch awareness campaigns in impacted communities.
The Institute highlights severe pollution in rivers like the Pra and Ankobra and proposes a comprehensive strategy that includes community engagement, regulatory enforcement, and economic diversification for those reliant on galamsey activities.
