Governance expert Akwasi Oppong Fosu has strongly criticized a recent move by former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) 2024 presidential flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, describing it as an “endorsement of stupidity that destroys democracy.”
The remarks follow Dr. Bawumia’s decision to welcome Prince Ofori, popularly known as “Fante Comedy,” who faces serious criminal allegations.
Fante Comedy, along with two other individuals, was arrested on Tuesday, August 12, after being implicated in issuing a death threat against President John Dramani Mahama and First Lady Lordina Mahama.
The threat reportedly included a vow to behead the First Lady. The group was also accused of spreading false information related to the recent August 6 helicopter crash incident.
In a Facebook post titled “Endorsement of Stupidity Destroys Democracy,” Mr. Oppong Fosu expressed deep concern over Dr. Bawumia’s actions following Fante Comedy’s release on bail.
He highlighted that instead of distancing himself from the comedian’s alleged criminal behavior, the former Vice President’s invitation sends a dangerous signal that impunity and reckless conduct are tolerated within the highest levels of leadership.
Mr. Oppong Fosu wrote, “And when, after bail, his first stop is the home of a former Vice-President and a presidential candidate in the 2024 general elections, it sends a dangerous message: impunity is tolerated, stupidity is endorsed.”
Prince Ofori’s threats, Mr. Oppong Fosu argued, go beyond comedy and enter criminality. His statement emphasized, “Prince Ofori, popularly known as ‘Fante Comedy,’ and his group threatened to kill the President and behead the First Lady. That is not ‘comedy’ — it is criminality.”
Further underscoring the risks to the nation’s democratic fabric, Oppong Fosu warned that such endorsements by influential political figures weaken leadership structures, undermine democracy, and foster instability.
“This is how leadership is weakened, democracy is undermined, and instability is bred,” he indicated.
He called on moral authorities and the wider political class to speak out against such recklessness, stating, “Silence is not neutrality — it is complicity.”
