Aspiring Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) have been cautioned against attempting to obstruct Members of Parliament (MPs) from accessing their share of the District Assembly Common Fund.
The warning comes amid growing concerns that such actions could disrupt the smooth implementation of development projects within constituencies.
Speaking on the issue, Minister designate for local government, Culture and religious affair Ahmed Ibrahim emphasized the need for collaboration between MPs and MMDCEs to ensure the equitable and efficient distribution of resources.
“Any attempt by incoming MMDCEs to frustrate or delay the release of MPs’ share of the Common Fund will be met with firm resistance. Such actions only serve to harm the constituents who rely on these funds for critical development projects,” the Banda MP stated.
The MPs’ share of the Common Fund plays a crucial role in addressing pressing needs within communities, including education, healthcare, infrastructure, and social intervention programs.
It is essential for MPs to have unhindered access to these funds to fulfill their mandates effectively.
The warning also highlighted the importance of teamwork between MPs and MMDCEs. Stakeholders urged incoming MMDCEs to prioritize collaboration and avoid actions that could create unnecessary tension or delays in constituency development efforts.
Past Issues and Lessons
The reminder comes in the wake of previous instances where strained relationships between MPs and MMDCEs led to conflicts over resource allocations, undermining local development.
The local government minister designate noted that such incidents create unnecessary setbacks and erode public trust in governance structures.
As the government prepares to appoint new MMDCEs, stakeholders are urging appointees to focus on fostering partnerships with MPs and prioritizing the needs of their constituents.
The release of MPs’ share of the Common Fund must remain a priority to ensure sustained progress in local development initiatives.
The minister for local government further warned that any actions aimed at sabotaging MPs in their efforts to access these funds will be addressed swiftly to protect the interests of the people.
