The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, on Tuesday presented assorted food items to the Ghana Prisons Service to support inmates across the country during the Ramadan period.
The donation, which is expected to benefit inmates in major prison facilities nationwide, included bags of sugar, gallons of cooking oil, cartons of tomato paste, bags of rice, milk and other essential food supplies.
The items are to support the feeding of inmates, particularly Muslims observing the holy month of Ramadan.
Speaking at the presentation, the Asawase MP underscored the importance of supporting inmates during Ramadan, describing the period as one of reflection, sacrifice and spiritual renewal.
He said the gesture was intended to demonstrate compassion and solidarity with persons in custody, many of whom are working toward rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
The Interior Minister also commended the resilience of inmates and reiterated the government’s commitment to improving their welfare and living conditions.
He expressed appreciation to the Chief Executive Officer of Engineers and Planners, Mr. Ibrahim Mahama, for his continued support to the Ghana Prisons Service.
Receiving the items on behalf of the Service, the Deputy Director-General of Prisons in charge of Operations, Dr. Francis Omane Addo, thanked the minister for his continued advocacy and support. He also conveyed gratitude to Mr. Mahama for his sustained assistance to the Service.
Dr. Omane Addo assured that the donated items would be distributed appropriately and put to good use to benefit inmates in the designated prison facilities across the country.
Ramadan, observed by Muslims worldwide, is a month of fasting, prayer and charity.
