Minister for the Interior, Alhaji Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, has inaugurated a seven-member Mediation Committee tasked with addressing the Gbiniyiri conflict and fostering long-term peace in the affected communities.
In a statement posted on his official Facebook page, the Minister said the committee will work closely with stakeholders to advance peacebuilding, reconciliation, and the sustainable resettlement of displaced persons.
The committee is chaired by peacebuilding expert Mr. Emmanuel Habuka Bombande. Other members include:
Hon. Alhaji Collins Dauda, MP and Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Lands and Natural Resources
Rev. Fr. Lazarus Annyereh, Chair of the Savannah Regional Peace Council
Dr. Festus Aubyn of the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding
Sylvia Horname Noagbesenu, Esq., Acting Director of the Women, Youth, Peace & Security Institute at KAIPTC
Prof. Ramatu Alhassan from the Department of Agricultural Economics & Agribusiness, University of Ghana
Dr. George Amoh, Executive Secretary of the National Peace Council
Alhaji Muntaka emphasized the committee’s mandate to foster peace, security, and social cohesion.
Their terms of reference include facilitating the safe return of displaced residents, assessing the impact of the conflict, promoting dialogue and reconciliation, recommending sustainable peace strategies, and strengthening local institutions to prevent future violence.
He further urged the committee to operate impartially, transparently, and inclusively, while engaging traditional authorities, opinion leaders, civil society, and security agencies.
“The ultimate goal,” he said, “is to rebuild peace and trust in Gbiniyiri and its surrounding communities.”
