The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all students following an unfortunate attack on some international students last Friday.
The incident occurred on March 14, 2025, after the International Programmes Office (IPO) and the Directorate of Student Affairs organized an “Akwaaba” event to formally welcome international students to the university.
While returning to their hostels after the event, some international students were allegedly attacked by individuals who had joined a student procession.
In a statement, KNUST strongly condemned the attack, emphasizing that such behavior is unacceptable. The university urged all students to adhere strictly to the rules and regulations outlined in the student handbook, warning that non-compliance could lead to dismissal.
According to the university’s management, swift action was taken in collaboration with security agencies, leading to the identification and apprehension of the alleged perpetrators. They are currently assisting with investigations, and the university assured stakeholders that those found guilty would face disciplinary and legal consequences.
The Vice-Chancellor has since met with the affected international students to personally reassure them of the institution’s dedication to their safety. Additionally, the KNUST Counselling Centre is providing psychosocial support to students impacted by the incident.
KNUST management further assured parents, guardians, and the international community that it remains steadfast in fostering a safe and inclusive campus environment. Measures are being put in place to prevent future occurrences and enhance student support systems.
