Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, former Minister for Information and Member of Parliament for Ofoase‑Ayirebi, has filed a defamation suit against Jamal Konney, Deputy Managing Director (Operations) of the Cocoa Marketing Company of Ghana, at the High Court in Accra.
The legal action follows comments allegedly made by Mr. Konney during a live broadcast on Okay FM on 13 February 2026. During the broadcast, Mr. Konney is reported to have accused Mr. Oppong Nkrumah of importing Chinese workers to Akyemansa to engage in illegal mining, locally known as “galamsey,” activities that damaged cocoa farms.
Mr. Oppong Nkrumah maintains that the allegations are false, malicious, and intended to tarnish his reputation. He claims the statements portray him as complicit in criminal activity, corrupt, and unfit for public office.
Claims and demands
Filed by lawyer Daniel Martey Addo of Nkrumah & Associates, the suit seeks:
- A declaration that the statements are defamatory.
- General damages of GHS 20 million for reputational harm.
- Aggravated and exemplary damages of GHS 10 million.
- A full and unconditional apology and retraction on Okay FM, in three national newspapers, and across digital platforms.
- A perpetual injunction preventing Mr. Konney from repeating the allegations.
- Removal of all defamatory material from radio archives, online publications, and social media.
The statement of claim contends that the broadcast caused significant reputational damage, emotional distress, public ridicule, and loss of trust among constituents and stakeholders.
The case is now pending before the High Court in Accra.
