The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) has announced plans to conduct a mass burial of unclaimed bodies at its mortuary following severe congestion and the facility reaching full capacity.
In a statement issued on Monday, December 22, 2025, management of the hospital said the exercise will involve all unclaimed, unknown and unidentified bodies currently at the mortuary.
According to the statement, relatives, next of kin or persons with interest in any of the bodies have been given a 21-day window to contact the hospital and make the necessary arrangements. The deadline has been set for on or before January 18, 2026.
Hospital records indicate that approximately 320 unclaimed bodies are expected to be included in the exercise.
Management stated that all bodies remaining unclaimed after the deadline will be buried in accordance with approved procedures and relevant regulations.
The mass burial exercise will be carried out in collaboration with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA).
Management of KBTH appealed to the public for understanding and cooperation, stressing that the decision was necessitated by public health and operational concerns at the mortuary.
Korle Bu Teaching Hospital is the country’s largest tertiary health facility and serves as a major referral centre for complex medical cases nationwide.
