Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has sharply criticized the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) for what he describes as an “unlawful and politically motivated” approach to investigating former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.
In a statement issued from East Legon, Mr. Agyepong questioned the legal basis of the OSP’s recent actions, arguing that no formal charges have been brought against Mr. Ofori-Atta, and thus he remains a private citizen, not an accused person.
“If the OSP has all the facts and evidence as claimed, then he should proceed to charge Mr. Ofori-Atta and prosecute him in a court of law. There is no need for media theatrics,” Agyepong stated. He further emphasized that legal proceedings can be conducted even in the absence of the accused, citing historical precedents in Ghana’s judicial system.
The outspoken engineer and statesman also challenged the authority of the OSP to declare any individual a fugitive, asserting that only a court of competent jurisdiction can make such a determination.
“When his life was allegedly under threat, he operated outside the country at the taxpayer’s expense. If that was possible, then surely he can reach Mr. Ofori-Atta without resorting to these public spectacles,” Agyepong added.
Describing the OSP’s recent moves as “a PR stunt,” he questioned the legitimacy of the office itself, calling it “a worthless drain on our overstretched public purse.” He also expressed concern that the actions of the OSP could undermine the image of the NPP, especially if perceived as politically expedient.
While reaffirming his commitment to accountability and the rule of law, Mr. Agyepong cautioned against what he termed “Rambo-style invasions in the name of investigations,” stressing that justice must be pursued through lawful and constitutional means.
“We, the people, will not condone any moves calculated to further damage our party’s brand on the altar of political expediency,” he concluded.
