The Majority Leader in Parliament, Hon. Ato Forson, has criticized the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) for allegedly politicizing the tragic killing of eight individuals by soldiers at the AngloGold Ashanti mining concession in Obuasi.
Speaking on the issue, Hon. Forson expressed disappointment with what he described as the NPP’s attempt to exploit the incident for political gain, rather than focusing on addressing the underlying causes and seeking justice for the victims.
“It is unfortunate that, instead of coming to terms with the resounding defeat they suffered in the last election and allowing the government to manage state affairs in line with the mandate of the people, the NPP is using this tragedy as a tool for cheap political gain,” he said.
Hon. Forson assured Ghanaians that the government, under the directive of President John Dramani Mahama, is committed to ensuring a thorough investigation into the incident. He emphasized that the truth would be uncovered, and justice would be served.
“We assure the people of Ghana that a full and impartial investigation will be conducted into this matter. Those responsible for this unfortunate incident will be held accountable,” he added.
The Majority Leader reiterated the government’s commitment to collaborating with relevant stakeholders to prevent similar occurrences and ensure that governance priorities are not derailed.
“Our focus is on ensuring that Ghana recovers from challenges and moves forward. We remain ready to work with all entities to achieve this goal and deliver for the people of Ghana,” he stated.
The tragic incident at the AngloGold Ashanti mining concession has sparked public outrage and calls for accountability. Soldiers reportedly opened fire on individuals at the site, leading to the deaths of eight people. The incident has since drawn widespread condemnation, with demands for a transparent investigation into the circumstances.
As investigations unfold, Hon. Forson’s remarks highlight the government’s stance on addressing the issue without partisanship, prioritizing justice for the victims and their families.
