Minority Chief Whip Kwame Governs Agbodza has raised concerns over what he describes as the government’s inappropriate and unnecessary recruitment and appointment activities during the transitional period.
According to him, these actions undermine the principles of good governance and disregard the outcomes of the recent elections.
Speaking to the media Mr. Agbodza criticized the government for making key appointments and recruiting personnel for sensitive institutions despite having lost the elections. “We are in a transitional mode, which means that everything should stay more or less as it is, except for necessary matters,” he stated.
He cited instances of individuals being sent to training centers for recruitment into the police service, immigration, and other security agencies. Many of these recruits, he claimed, were left without basic accommodations and adequate preparation. “These people are being sent with the hope that, come what may, they will complete their training and secure positions,” he added.
The Minority Chief Whip also accused state institutions, including the Bank of Ghana and the National Health Insurance Authority, of conducting mass recruitment drives in the twilight of the government’s tenure. He particularly condemned the appointment of a new Chief Director for the Ministry of Roads and Highways shortly after the outgoing Chief Director retired last week.
“Why is the Ministry appointing a new Chief Director now, when the government has already lost the election? This should be a decision for the incoming government,” he argued.
Mr. Agbodza further criticized the government for prioritizing these actions instead of addressing pressing issues such as clearing the arrears owed to road contractors. “The priority should be finding ways to pay contractors who are owed billions of cedis for work done on our roads,” he emphasized.
The Minority Chief Whip called on the government to halt these activities and focus on ensuring a smooth transition to the next administration.
