MTN, a leading telecommunications company, has reported a staggering 471 fibre optic cable cuts in the Ashanti region between January and July 2024, primarily caused by ongoing road construction activities.
According to Mr. Charles Osei Akoto, Regional Technical Head of MTN, these cable cuts have resulted in network poles being disconnected from the main equipment, impacting some customer services.
“The high number of fibre optic cable cuts has been a challenge for us, but I’m pleased to note that only 38 of these cuts resulted in service disruptions for our customers, thanks to our robust measures aimed at maintaining service quality,” Mr. Akoto said.
However, the company also faced additional challenges, including nine pole sites being locked up during this period, which restricted access for resolving issues and contributed to network problems.
Mr. Akoto appealed to the public to report any fibre cables encountered during their activities without cutting them. “We urge the public to report any fibre cables they come across during their activities without cutting them.
This will help us to take necessary precautions to avoid disruptions to our services.” He also urged for the settlement of disputes without resorting to locking up pole sites, emphasizing the need for uninterrupted network services.
“We appeal to the public to settle disputes without locking up our pole sites, to ensure that our customers continue to enjoy uninterrupted network services.”
