Muslims in the Ashanti Region have been urged to strictly adhere to the principles and teachings of Islam during and after Eid-ul-Fitr, and to avoid actions that could tarnish the image of the religion.
The appeal was made by Otumfuo Nsumankwaahene, Baffour Asare Kogyawusu, who represented the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at the 2026 Eid-ul-Fitr prayers held at the Kumasi Central Mosque.
He noted that Islam continues to grow and thrive in Ghana due to its positive impact on both its followers and national development. However, he cautioned the youth against engaging in unacceptable behaviors that could generate negative perceptions about Islam, especially within predominantly Muslim communities.
Eid-ul-Fitr, which marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, was observed on Friday, March 20, 2026. Muslims across Kumasi gathered at the Kumasi Central Mosque to offer prayers after 30 days of fasting and spiritual reflection.
The event attracted a number of dignitaries, including the Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori Agyeman Boadi, and the Municipal Chief Executive for Asokore Mampong, Ben Abdullai, among others. The prayers were led by the Ashanti Regional Chief Imam, Sheikh Abdul Rahman Zakaria.
Addressing the congregation, the Nsumankwaahene emphasized the need for peace, unity, and mutual respect among people of different religious backgrounds. He urged Muslims to consistently live by the values and teachings of Islam beyond the Ramadan period.
“The good doctrine of the founder of Islam is what has sustain the growth of Islamic religion in Ghana and the Ashanti region. Islam should have collapse if the doctrines are irrelevant. The religion is alive because the doctrines are good and its shaping societies and promoting good moral practice. I have also ways been attending your Eid-ul-Fitr prayers here at the Kumasi Central Mosque. Every year I see increase of your number meaning Islam is not dying but growing. However, my question is we going to see any positive impact after this 30 days of fasting and prayers’’ he asked the congregation calling for behavioral change.
Prophet Mohammed founder of Islam made a lot of sacrifice in the establishment of the religion therefore, I expect you all to emulate and observe the teaching and tenants of the Islamic religion’’ he admonished the congregation.
The Kumasi Mayor, Richard Ofori Agyeman Boadi, who also represented the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, encouraged Muslims to maintain the discipline, humility, and spiritual commitment exhibited during Ramadan.
“As a government the regional minister says he will ensure that any development projects and programmes he will lobby for the Ashanti region in general he will make sure that the Islamic Community get its fair share and that’s his personal commitment to Zongo Communities’’ Zuba told the congregation.
He added” assured the Islamic community members that the Zongo Communities remains one of the priority areas of the ruling NDC government and the Regional minister’’.
He explained that “ that’s why since Dr. Frank Amoakohene became the regional minister he made is a point for Zongo members to hold some key government institutional positions in the region’’
He added” this decision confirm and reaffirms the trust and believe the government has in the members of the Zongo Communities because of their loyalty and upbring in line with the Islamic Teaching’’ KMA boss spoke on behalf of the Dr. Frank Amoakohene.
He reaffirmed government’s commitment to supporting the development of Muslim communities in the region.
On his part, the Municipal Chief Executive for Asokore Mampong, Ben Abdullai, urged Muslims to view Eid-ul-Fitr not only as a celebration but also as a moment for reflection and renewed dedication to their faith.
