Henry Nana Boakye, the National Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has strongly endorsed the recent decision by the NPP National Council to prioritize the election of the party’s presidential candidate before conducting other internal elections.
In an interview monitored by Kumasimail.com on Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen program, Nana Boakye challenged the popular analogy comparing the party’s electoral process to building a house from the foundation upwards.
He emphasized that the NPP is a political party, not a physical structure, and therefore the analogy does not apply in this context.
“For me, the decision by the National Council is one of the best in these times,” Nana Boakye stated.
He explained that in many established democracies, such as Canada, political parties often elect their presidential or prime ministerial candidate first. Subsequently, the candidate appoints national executives and other officials at regional or state levels.
“This is how political parties operate globally. It’s not house building, so I urge those making that analogy to reconsider,” he added.
Nana Boakye also reflected on the state of political discourse within the party, particularly during the introduction of the controversial ‘Dumsor Levy (D-Levy) by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.
He noted that internal debates within the NPP often overshadowed the national conversation on the levy, with party supporters focusing more on internal elections and leadership contests than on the policy itself.
“Our social media operatives, who should have been defending the party’s stance on national issues, were instead embroiled in internal conflicts, even bringing up personalities like Bawumia and Ken,” he observed.
This, he said, “distracted from the real issues and created unnecessary divisions.”
Highlighting the risks of prolonged delays in conducting presidential primaries, Nana Boakye warned against allowing internal party tensions to escalate over extended periods.
“We cannot spend two to three years waiting to conduct presidential primaries and keep increasing the temperature by speaking ill of ourselves,” he said firmly.
He praised the National Council’s proposal as a positive step forward, noting that the party will later deliberate on the modalities for conducting the presidential election.
Responding to rumors that the party intends to hold national executive elections only after the presidential primaries, Nana Boakye dismissed such claims as unfounded.
“No such decision has been taken,” he clarified. “For now, the focus is solely on conducting the presidential election first.”
