The Upper West Regional Communication Bureau of the National Democratic Congress has demanded swift action following what it describes as the deliberate theft of food supplies meant for students of Wa Technical Institute (WaTech).
In a statement signed by the party’s Upper West Regional Communication Officer, Issah Kantagyere Bonsingmwini, the NDC said it has become aware that essential food items supplied to the school are being diverted by the bursar, Madam Hawa Batong. The party claims this is not the first time she has been linked to such an incident, alleging that a similar case at Kaleo SHTS years ago was suppressed.
According to the NDC, the alleged misconduct undermines student welfare and government investment in secondary education. The party warned that food diversion compromises nutrition, erodes public trust, wastes state resources and nurtures a culture of impunity within school management systems.
“We cannot allow officials to steal rice, oil and milk meant for children who rely on these meals to learn and thrive. This is theft from their plates and their future,” Comrade Issah Kantagyere Bonsingmwini said in the statement.
The NDC is calling for an immediate investigation by the Ghana Education Service and GTVET with supervision from the Ministry of Education, as well as the suspension and prosecution of any staff found culpable. The party further recommends strengthened monitoring involving PTAs, student representatives and electronic surveillance in school kitchens and stores. It also wants whistleblowers protected.
The party has urged the Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, and the Director Generals of GES and GTVET to take decisive action to restore confidence in the school feeding system.
“We expect leadership that protects students and public resources. Those who treat children’s food as personal property must be held accountable,” Comrade Bonsingmwini added.
