The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former First Lady and founder of the 31st December Women’s Movement, Her Excellency Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings.
In a statement signed by the party’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the NDC described Mrs. Agyeman-Rawlings as a “remarkable woman whose lifelong commitment to the empowerment of women and children has left an indelible mark on Ghana’s history.”
The party highlighted her tireless efforts in championing education, economic empowerment, and social inclusion for Ghanaian women through the 31st December Women’s Movement.
As one of the founding pillars of the NDC, Mrs. Agyeman-Rawlings was credited with playing an instrumental role in shaping the ideals and identity of the party.
Despite her later decision to establish another political movement, the statement emphasized that her place in the story of the NDC “will always remain significant.”
Mr. Kwetey recalled that during the commemoration of the birth date of the NDC’s founder, the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, on June 22, 2025, the party formally recognized Mrs. Agyeman-Rawlings as the “Founding Mother of the NDC,” in appreciation of her foundational role and enduring impact.
“We take comfort in knowing that this acknowledgment was made while she was still with us, reaffirming that the NDC has always held her legacy in respect and gratitude,” the statement read.
The NDC extended heartfelt condolences to the Rawlings family, especially her children and loved ones, pledging solidarity with them in their time of grief.
“We share in their grief and pray for strength and comfort in this difficult period. May the soul of Mrs. Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings rest in perfect peace,” the statement concluded.
