A recent analysis by Global Info Analytics suggests that a significant number of National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters prefer Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 general elections.
According Musah Danquah, the choice is not out of admiration, but due to a strategic belief that he would be easier to defeat than his main contender, Kennedy Agyapong.
Speaking on Metro TV, Executive Director of Global Info Analytics, Musah Danquah, broke down the nuances of the latest political polling data, revealing that 48% of NPP voters support Bawumia, while 20% of NDC voters surprisingly favor him as the NPP’s flagbearer.
“Some NDC supporters are backing Dr. Bawumia not because they support him ideologically, but because they believe he presents a weaker challenge to the NDC’s chances in 2028 compared to Kennedy Agyapong,” Musah Danquah explained.
He cautioned, however, against taking this data at face value, warning that the trend could reflect a form of tactical voting aimed at influencing the NPP’s internal selection process.
“We must be very careful,” he added. “There are NDC sympathizers who might strategically support Bawumia in polling or open primaries to ensure the NPP elects a candidate they perceive as beatable. But we need to interrogate the data further and not assume this preference is genuine admiration” he told Moro Awudu.
The researcher also touched on the broader perception issues facing Dr. Bawumia, including questions about his consistency, credibility, and how he is viewed by the youth and religious communities.
While some view Bawumia as politically vulnerable due to his record in government and perceived ideological shifts, others in the NPP see him as a unifying figure capable of bridging the party’s internal divides.
The Global Info Analytics Chief noted that while Bawumia enjoys significant support within the party, public perception beyond party lines will play a crucial role in the 2024 general elections.
“These dynamics are complex. The electorate is watching closely, and both parties must tread carefully as they approach their final candidate selections,” Danquah concluded.
The full report from Global Info Analytics is expected to be released later this month.
