Awal Mohammed a leading member of the campaign team of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeated 2024 presidential candidate has urged party delegates to vote against former Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, ahead of the party’s internal Presidential candidate contest.
In a Facebook post, Awal Mohammed, an aide to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, alleged that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is backing Mr. Agyapong’s bid in order to revive allegations linking him to drug-related activities.
“The NDC is pushing for his election so that they can resurrect allegations of his alleged dealings in drugs. Vote Number 3 for Dr. Bawumia. #Letswatchit,” Mr. Mohammed wrote.

However, the NDC has rejected the claim. Responding to the allegations, Patrick Kwame Atuah, an Ashanti Regional Youth Organizer hopeful of the NDC, said the party has no prior knowledge of any cocaine-related allegations involving Mr. Agyapong or any NPP presidential aspirant.
“The NDC has no idea of any cocaine connection involving the former NPP MP and presidential hopeful,” Mr. Atuah stated. He added that Mr. Mohammed’s comments have drawn the party’s attention to the issue.
“Once Awal has brought this cocaine issue up, it becomes important for the NDC to take interest in it,” he said.
The comments have heightened tensions within the NPP’s internal political space as the party prepares for its next phase of leadership selection, while also drawing reactions from the opposition.
