Accra based Starrfm Sports Desk has reported that John Dramani Mahama, president-elect of the Republic, is set to name former minister of Youth and Sports, Nii Lante Vanderpuye as the country’s next sports minister.
In what might not be too much of a surprise to many, the former Sports Minister’s name has headlined all the conversations surrounding the Sports Ministerial appointment.
Hon. Vanderpuye, a former football commentator previously led the sports ministry from 2015 to 2016 under John Mahama after having served as deputy minister at the Trade and Local Government ministries.
The former MP for Odododiodio has always shown his passion for less-financed sports especially boxing. The minister can be credited with implementing several initiatives aimed at promoting sports development in the country during his tenure.
If the appointment is confirmed, the former Sports Minister will face a daunting task of reviving Ghana’s sports sector. The country’s football team has been struggling in international competitions, and sports infrastructure is in dire need of upgrade.
To succeed, the minister will need to work closely with stakeholders, including the Ghana Football Association, sports administrators, and the media. The minister will also need to develop a comprehensive strategy to address the challenges facing the sports sector, including funding, infrastructure, and talent development.
