In the wake of recent reductions in U.S. foreign aid to Africa, the USAID Ghana Mission Director, Ms. Kimberly Rosen, met with the Chief Director of the Northern Regional Coordinating Council (NRCC) Sumaila Ewuntomah Abudu, to discuss the implications of these funding cuts on Ghana’s development projects.
The meeting, held at the Northern Regional Minister’s office, underscored concerns about the impact on key sectors such as agriculture and health, particularly in the Northern, which has historically benefited from USAID support.
USAID has historically been a major development partner in Northern Ghana, supporting key sectors such as agriculture, education and health. However, the Trump administration’s policy shift has led to a significant decrease in financial assistance, affecting numerous projects designed to empower local communities, promote economic growth and enhance security in the region.
During the meeting, Ms. Rosen reaffirmed USAID’s commitment to Ghana despite the funding cuts. She acknowledged the importance of the Northern Region in Ghana’s development strategy and assured that USAID would continue to explore ways to support initiatives within the limitations of the revised budget.
“While our funding has been reduced, our dedication to fostering resilient communities, promoting private sector growth and empowering women and youth remains unwavering,” Ms. Rosen stated.
“We are working closely with stakeholders to ensure that the most critical projects continue to receive support,” she added.
Mr. Abudu expressed gratitude for USAID’s past contributions but did not hide his concerns regarding the economic and social impact of the funding cuts.
He stressed that the reduction of USAID’s assistance has already had noticeable effects, particularly in the Northern Region which has relied on the agency’s interventions for years.
“The withdrawal of USAID support is being felt across multiple sectors, affecting livelihoods and economic stability,” Mr. Abudu noted.
“Our priority is to sustain progress in development, and we appeal to USAID to reconsider these reductions, particularly in areas critical to maintaining peace and security”, he stated.
The meeting also addressed rising security concerns in the region, with Mr. Abudu highlighting the need for sustained international partnerships to tackle emerging challenges.
He urged USAID to continue collaborating with the Ghanaian government to find innovative solutions that will prevent disruptions to the progress made so far.
Despite the challenges posed by the funding cuts, the discussions reflected shared commitment to ensuring that the Northern Region remains on the track for sustainable development. Both parties agreed to explore alternative funding sources and partnership opportunities to mitigate the impact of the policy changes.
The engagement between the NRCC and USAID Ghana underscores the ongoing dialogue between Ghanaian authorities and international development partners, aimed at ensuring continued progress in the face of shifting global policies.
